＊幕があがると、真夜中。デンマーク、エルノシア城の城壁の上。
　　衛兵のバーナードが見張りに立っている。
　　下手から衛兵のマーセラスとハムレットの親友のホレイショが登場。
The curtain rises on Castle Elsinore, in Denmark, atop the castle walls.
BERNARDO, a soldier, is standing guard.

MARCELLUS and HORATIO enter from stage right.

バーナード　　誰だ？　名を名乗れ！
BERNARDO:　Hey!　Who are you?　Give me your names!

マーセラス　　国王万歳！
MARCELLUS:　Hail to the King!

バーナード　　マーセラスか？
BERNARDO:　Marcellus?　Is that you?

マーセラス　　そうだ、バーナード。
MARCELLUS:　It is, Bernardo.

バーナード　　よく来てくれた。時間厳守だな。　ホレイショも一緒か？
BERNARDO:　I’m so glad you’re here.　You’ve come just in time.　Is Horatio there?
　　　　　　　
ホレイショ　　少なくとも、手はここに。
HORATIO:　A piece of him.

バーナード　　よく来てくれた、ホレイショ。
BERNARDO:　Welcome, Horatio!

マーセラス　　おい、例のものは今夜も出たのか？
MARCELLUS:　Hey, has it appeared again?

バーナード　　まだだ。
BERNARDO:　No, not yet.

マーセラス　　ホレイショは、気の迷いに過ぎぬと言い、端から信じようとはしない。
　　　　　そこで今晩、ともに見張りに立つように頼んだのだ。
　　　　　もし、また亡霊が出たら、我らの目を信じてくれるだろう。
MARCELLUS:　Horatio says it’s but our fantasy and will not believe me because he thinks it is impossible.
　　　　　　　　So I asked him to watch with me tonight.
　　　　　　　　I think he’ll believe me if he sees the ghost himself.

ホレイショ　　おいおい、出るものか。
HORATIO:　Come on, you guys are kidding me!

バーナード　　まあ聞け、ホレイショ。昨晩のことだ。
　　　　　北極星の西に輝くあの星が、めぐり動いて、今照らしている天の一角で光り始めたとき、
　　　　　折りしも鐘が１時を打ったそのときに・・・・（鐘がなる）
BERNARDO:　Ok, listen, Horatio.
　　　　　　　 Last night of all, when you same star that’s westward from the pale moved to where it now
　　　　　　　 burns, the bell then beating one…(The bell rings)

マーセラス　（客席のほうを指さして）見ろ・・・また出た・・・
MARCELLUS:　(pointing towards the audience) Look!　He comes again!

バーナード　（マーセラスの指さす方を見て）亡くなられた国王のお姿さながら・・・
BERNARDO:　(looking in the same direction) It… It looks like the dead king…
